The fight with the displacer beasts continues to its foregone conclusion, which is them lying in pieces around us, and us covered in blood and regrets. =SECURITY SYSTEM DISABLED= We extract a bauble from the chunks of one of the beasts – a folding pack of metallic cards, bearing the Mark of Warding, as well as some other unknown symbols. A cursory analysis of the pack reveals nothing particularly informative about them, and their use remains a mystery.
We proceed down a hallway on the upper floor that corresponds to one in the shadow reflection from which could be heard slavering, monstrous growls. =CORRECTION: HEARD ONLY BY DRIZZLE. POSSIBLY A CONFABULATION BROUGHT ON BY TERMINAL CONDITION OF GNOMISHNESS= At the end of the hallway is a door, protected by a series of elemental runes. =PATTERN MATCH DETECTED: WARDING CARDS ARE POSSIBLE KEY FOR DOOR= Drizzle disarms the traps with the assistance of the cards, and we pass through into a small office.
The room contains a closed and locked shelves, a pair of tapestries showing scenes of an otherworldly battle, a large desk upon which rests a book =APPARENTLY ACID-TRAPPED, AS NOTED BY SKYE= and a door marked with the symbol of Mabar, the Endless Night, well known as a symbol marking doors that should never be opened. We put that knowledge aside for the time being.
I bolster the book’s structure in an attempt to protect if from any failed disarm attempts in the future, while Zakar moves across the room to examine one of the tapestries. The cloth depicts a battle between giants and hideous monsters, which it conjectures may be the Quori of an earlier Age. However, the Deva’s close inspection has the unusual effect of enraging the inhabitants of the weave, and tentacles lash out of its surface, wrapping around our ally.
We handle this the same way we handle most encounters with new lifeforms – Skye kills it dead and Drizzle steals the spoils. Its effectiveness is impressive – we end up with one severed tentacle writhing on the ground, and one Handy Haversack filled with angry tapestry. =STRATEGIC ANALYSIS INDICATES 34% LIKELIHOOD OF DRIZZLE BEING EATEN BY HIS BACKPACK ONE DAY. =ERROR: DATA CORRUPTION= THE PRECEDING STRING HAS BEEN RECORDED BUT CANNOT BE RE-PARSED=
We take the book to deal with later, then unlock and loot the cabinets. We find lists of marked individuals, similar to what we have found on the bodies of those hunting us previously, some cash, and a key that fits the lock on the door of Mabar.
We unlock and open the door. =AGAINST ALL BETTER JUDGMENT=
