In the tower, we are quickly stopped by a narrow, collapsed passageway. Drizzle, Skye and Tani have no trouble navigating the rubble, but Balasar and I are severely delayed by the need to move rubble out of the way. The passage enters into an antechamber that is possibly part of the library, with huge rooms that would be suitable for giants to use. A sign drawn here says “Hall of Learning”. We bar the entrance to prevent easy pursuit while our sneakier members disarm the remaining traps and unlock doors leading further into the library.
We choose one of two stairways leading down to a lower level lecture hall, where everything seems to have been smashed or crumbled away with time. =LIKELIHOOD OF ENCOUNTERING GIANTS HERE SEEMS REMOTE= Images of Aureon abound, strengthening the feeling of knowledge. One statue of Aureon in particular conceals a hidden passage, walled off by crumbling bricks. We kick that shit DOWN. It opens to a stench-filled hallway and some side chambers, with the stench originating from a deep chasm. We leave this for later and return to the doors in the lecture hall, after pushing the statue back into place.
We choose a door labeled “Hall of Records” =KICK RESISTANCE OF ANCIENT DOORS IS SURPRISINGLY HIGH= and find a huge room piled high with books, tablets and scrolls. Behind a security field, we find a Pokeball containing a ritual of some kind, although its exact nature eludes us. We choose to keep it.
Through our investigation, we find that the organic who created the ritual was being naughty, acting against the library and consorting with some kind of evil creature. Its secret area is beneath a trap door here, at the bottom of an evil spiral staircase. There, we find a human skeleton lying on a pallet. A journal of the skeleton details creatures freed from beneath the library coming out of the ground, possibly from the chasm we saw, and converting those they killed. The sphere that we found contains the soul of the perpetrator of this deed, while a similar one near this body contains a soldier of the library. The act of putting their souls in the spheres ostensibly protected them from consumption by the creatures below. =DESIRABILITY OF BEING TRAPPED IN A MAGICAL SPHERE FOR ETERNITY VERSUS CONVERSION IS DEBATABLE= Also near the body, we find a pouch containing a holy symbol to Dol Arrah and one to Aureon. We take both.
For the ritual that we are to perform, we require 3 year old ashes of an arcanist, so we continue searching. =NOTE: DEAD WIZARDS AGE LIKE FINE CHEESE= We eventually find a room filled with urns, and a creature who looks like =ERROR: RYANNA IDENTITY IMPLAUSIBLE. RESCANNING ERRRRRRRRRRROORRRRRRRRR= It does not immediately attack us. But its allies that suddenly appear do. And once it is injured, things gets worse. It grows to enormous size, discarding its disguise and emitting waves of maggots. Then worms burst out of its allies chests.
